The popular opera company, Derby Gilbert & Sullivan, presents a week long festival of musical treats to celebrate their 50th anniversary at The Buxton Opera House.
Wednesday 8th March at 7.30pm – National Heritage Opera presents Madam Butterfly By Puccini
Heritage Opera visits Buxton Opera House for the first time with Puccini’s heart-breaking story of undying love and longing, in this critically acclaimed production. Soprano Sarah Helsby Hughes and tenor Nicholas Sales lead a cast of 10 professional singers, accompanied by a 28-piece orchestra. Sung in Italian with English subtitles.
Thursday 9th March 7.30pm – Flanders and Swann
Donald Maxwell, a regular and favourite performer in Buxton, will join with Andrew Nicklin to present the songs of Flanders and Swann others. This duo has been highly praised for similar concerts over the last few years.
Friday 10th March 7.30pm – The Sorcerer
Although The Sorcerer is less well-known than the ever-popular The Mikado, it contains delicious humour and beautiful and exciting music, including the famous patter song, My name is John Wellington Wells, which is always ‘explosive’ fun! Accompanied by a full orchestra.
Saturday 11th March 2.30pm and 7.30pm – The Mikado
The Mikado has survived for over 130 years and remains arguably the most popular opera written by the partnership. This new production by Andrew Nicklin, with Gilbert poking (not always) gentle fun at the British Establishment, remains as potent as it has ever been, especially post Brexit. Ko-Ko’s ‘Little List’ will inevitably be updated to take into account the news and the fads of early 2017. Accompanied by a full orchestra.
